Our dental crown treatment steps

Consultation
If you need a crown, or are interested in crown treatment, you will have an initial consultation. We will have a look at your teeth and gums to make sure a crown is the best treatment option for you, and explain the process to you. You are also encouraged to ask any questions – our priority is to make sure you feel at ease and in the know about your treatment.
Preparation
If you are happy to proceed, we will prepare your tooth so it can be crowned successfully. This includes removing a layer of your natural tooth enamel, leaving a strong inner core that will eventually be hidden by your crown. We will take an impression of your tooth so your crown can be made to your exact specifications by our expert dental technicians.
Fitting
When your crown is ready, we will remove your temporary crown and make sure you are happy with the size and colour of your bespoke new one. We will then fit the new one securely in place using strong dental cement.
Smile!
Your new smile is ready for you to show off! Dr Karlekar will give you some personalised tips for keeping your new crown in the best condition. We will also always follow up with you a few weeks later to ensure your crown is working for you.

Crowns are the perfect way to rebuild broken teeth or to strengthen those that have been weakened by decay or large fillings. They are custom-made to fit perfectly over a tooth, matching the colour of your existing teeth and creating the shapes and contours of a natural tooth.

Teeth crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including metal, ceramic and porcelain. Porcelain crowns are very aesthetic and are often used to create a natural-looking result. We can also bond porcelain to precious metal for added strength while still remaining tooth-coloured.

: The best way to look after your crown is to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth. It is also important to visit your dentist for regular check ups, so they can keep an eye on your crown and the tooth underneath.
: Your crown is made to exactly match your other teeth, so it won’t be noticeable in your smile. We record the shade of the neighbouring teeth to make sure your crown will be a perfect blend and beautifully enhance your smile. Your temporary crown, which is fitted to protect your prepared tooth until your permanent crown is ready, may be more noticeable, but is only in place for around two weeks.
: To be the ideal shape for a crown, some of the outer surface of your tooth needs to be removed, leaving a strong inner core. The amount of tooth enamel taken away is the same thickness as your new crown.
: No, it shouldn’t hurt to have your tooth prepared. We use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort, and it should feel no different to having a filling. The actual fitting of your crown is also not painful. Once the tooth is shaped, an impression of the prepared tooth and one of the opposite jaw is taken and also a record of your bite. The impressions will be given to the technician, along with any other information they need to make the crown.
: If your crown is properly cared for, it can last for as many as 12-15 years, on average. The crown itself cannot decay, but decay can start where the edge of the crown joins the tooth. It is very important to keep this area as clean as your other teeth, or decay could endanger the crown.
: Because the shape of the crown will be slightly different from the shape of your tooth before it was crowned, you may be aware of it to begin with. Within a few days it should feel fine, and you will not notice it. The crown may need some adjustment if it feels higher than the surrounding teeth. : Post crowns may be used when the tooth has been root filled. The dentist makes a double-ended ‘post’ to fit into the root canal. This can be either prefabricated stainless steel, carbon fibre or custom made of gold. One end of the post is cemented into the root canal and the other end holds the crown firmly in place.
