What does the veneer treatment process involve?

Your veneers treatment begins with a consultation. We make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and suitable for veneers, and run through the treatment process with you. We also take digital images to show you a preview of how veneers can transform the appearance of your smile.

We prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel structure, which ensures your veneer can be permanently bonded in place later. We take impressions of your teeth, which are used to make your veneers to your exact specifications for an accurate and comfortable fit.

The colour for your new veneer is also recorded, either to match your surrounding teeth or used in a lighter shade to brighten your smile. If needed, we fit a temporary veneer to protect your prepared tooth between appointments.

When we receive your veneers, you’ll be invited for your fitting appointment. We make sure the look is exactly what you expected before fixing the veneers using a special dental adhesive.

: After fitting, it is important to keep your veneer well-maintained with regular brushing and flossing. Your dentist and hygienist will show you how to keep on top of your dental hygiene and keep a close eye on the health of your teeth and gums.
: Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth (usually on the upper arch). A veneer can also make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.
: Although veneers are resilient, they can break just as your natural teeth can. It is important to treat them with care, so try not to bite your fingernails or chew pen tops or use your teeth to open anything. Also, it is probably best to steer clear of very hard foods that could cause damage to the veneer. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.
: You shouldn’t find either the treatment for veneers or the veneers themselves painful. We use a local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort during the preparation and fitting process and ensure you are relaxed and ready before beginning any treatment. Most patients experience no pain or discomfort at all. You may feel some sensitivity once your veneers have been fitted, but this will go away after a few days. 
: Veneers should last for many years if they are treated with care. They can chip and break, but can be easily repaired or replaced.
: A veneer takes at least two visits; the first to prepare the tooth and to match the shade, and the second to fit it. Before bonding it in place, your dentist will show you the veneer on your tooth to make sure you are happy with it.
: Only minor adjustments can be made to the veneer after it is fitted. It is usually best to wait a little while to get used to it before any changes are made. Your dentist will probably want to check and polish it a week or so after it is fitted, and to make sure that you are happy with it.
